Declan Rice
Be fair, in the modern game, this young man is the best we've produced other than Rio. He could even go on to be better - take him out of todays 11 and that defence would fall apart. On paper that current back four have no chance of four straight clean sheets. Rice is the key, the way he stepped back and covered today was very good. A mention too for Diop - another fantastic young player, and Fabianski, best keeper since Rob Green and maybe best since Ludo.

We're in a good place at the moment. Let's enjoy

Re: Declan Rice

Game was a lot more open so on several occasions he was able to move forward with the ball and really link up with the attacks, rather than pass sideways for some else. Love to see him improve this part of his game. Would really make him into a top class holding player, as opposed to an excellent but functional one.

Re: Declan Rice
Considering Maguire's fee, his age and that he's a CB 100m is not enough! Someone will pay it.
Should have just said he's not for sale and if someone comes in with crazy money cross that bridge when it comes

vexed is a very sad idiot

I'm going to be the non bedwetter on the thread and say Rice has a long way to go to be as good as Carrick was and I'd almost definitely pick the hugely experienced, probably 4-500 Premier League games and 30+ England caps over Rice under any circumstances and you'd have to be stupid not to.

why would you compare carricks stats at the end of his career to rice's at the start?

simpleton

Vexed is actually Declan Rice and this is all just a piss-taking ploy, where he is winding us all up. Otherwise I don't get it.

Re: Declan Rice
I only saw the MOTD highlights which hardly mentioned him at all.
I understand that he was excellent and I am happy for that to go without media comment as it’s just expected.
You can understand Southgates concern to get him to stop pretending to be Irish given the other options are Henderson, Dier, Delph the Newcastle bloke and little else.
Henderson is a solid Premier league player but Rice is light years ahead of all of them

Re: Declan Rice
Rice is one of the players that give me confidence when he is on or around the ball. He will come away with it and make the right decision the vast majority of the time.

A lot to say for someone of his age.

If people have not figured out Vexed by now, I don't know what to say. Look at the username.

Re: Declan Rice
Somehow I don't think Vexed is going to give up on this one - too much fucking pride to realize that he would get a lot more credit on here by admitting his mistake. He'll still be singing the same tune when Rice has 50 England caps and we're getting bids of over £100m.

Carrick was certainly a better technical player than Rice is at the moment, but the big difference is that Rice plays with so much more heart than Carrick ever did. He is also stronger and is improving at a frightening rate. He'll soon leave Carrick in the shade.

still saying he's mot midfielder?

Re: Declan Rice
Carrick at 20 was looking good, coolness of an experienced pro, with loads of promise to imrpove, just like Rice.

Different type of player, though. Carrick was much more about his passing, without so much of the muscling opposition players off the ball and challenging in the air that Rice does.

Besides, I think Declan is more similar to Scott Parker than Carrick.

Re: Declan Rice
The biggest dissapointment when Carrick left was the pathetic deal that we struck with Spurs.

Was it £2m with no sell-on?

Re: Declan Rice
Top fella was Carrick, but was definitely one of the players where I wasn't really bothered at all when he left.

Never overly pulled up trees for us for the reasons mentioned, was basically surrounded by cack most of the time and so couldn't realise his full potential with us, as he wasn't that sort of dominant player.

Shame, as in the times when we did have better squads and quality in the middle with him, could see how mustard he was.

"In a shit team, I'd pick Declan over Carrick every day of the week."

Absolutely spot on. Carrick was a Rolls Royce player and so, when we was in hard tough games against teams who battered you, he was pretty much a waste of a shirt. It always got my goat with him as I desperately wanted to see him smash a few opponents but it was just wasn't in him. He wasn't a good player to have when your back was against the wall.

But, as you say, with good movement and better players in a team, like Man Utd, that weren't constantly under pressure, he looked immense as he had time to drop a shoulder and knock a pass.

If Rice can get close to Carrick's passing ability then, my god, what a player he will be.

Re: Declan Rice
Ride and Carrick are very different players, Carrick is the best passer of the ball I have seen at West Ham since Devo. Rice is an excellent ball winning defensive midfielder.

Re: Declan Rice
Maguire is a good solid centre half but he’s nowhere near a dominant player like Van Dijk or a footballer like Rio Ferdinand.
Pogba and Maguire cost them about £180m
Rice and Diop cost £20m
I wouldn’t swap

My exact thoughts were, 'If Mcguire is worth £85mio, what the fuck is Rice worth?'

Re: Declan Rice
Carrick looked half the player if he didn't have intelligent movement in front of him, which, unfortunately, was often the case when he was with us.

I think Declan's skill set is less dependent on the quality of the other players in the team.

In a shit team, I'd pick Declan over Carrick every day of the week.

The choice is a lot harder with the side we've got at the moment. Probably Carrick, but marginally. And subject to Declan not improving his passing by just a bit.

Sven Roeder 11:17 Mon Sep 23
Re: Declan Rice
Carrick was more a passer , Declan is more a defensive mind.
Would be nice to have those two together

BillC79 11:13 Mon Sep 23
Re: Declan Rice
How would people compare him to Carrick at a similar age? Different styles but Same-ish position.

I think Rice has more impact on a game than Carrick did at the same age, but you could tell the class Carrick had by the time he found on the ball.
